At The Dark Gallery, tattoos are more than just art. For some, they represent a shield - protecting, healing, and empowering.
This is Ninna's story.
A Safe Space in the Shadows
Ninna first came to Anders Grucz' studio in March 2022. She was battling severe anxiety, deep depression, and post-traumatic stress - conditions that had kept her housebound. Years of challenges, including childhood bullying, substance misuse, and the recent loss of a close friend, had left her feeling isolated and judged by the world.
Stepping into The Dark Gallery was different. Despite the dark decor - skulls and haunting art - Ninna felt a sense of safety. Anders has worked hard to create a welcoming environment, where customers can choose their own music and express their vulnerabilities without fear of judgment.
Tattoos as Healing
For Ninna, the process of getting tattooed became a journey of healing. The dark, protective designs have given her a sense of empowerment. “It’s like a shield,” she says. Over time, her anxiety about being stared at has lessened, and now, her tattoos bring her a sense of pride and strength.

The bond between Ninna and Anders has been instrumental in her healing process. Their long conversations during tattoo sessions, coupled with psychological support, helped her set emotional and physical boundaries. In Anders' chair, Ninna learned to regain control over her reactions, and today, their mutual trust makes the tattooing process smoother and less emotionally draining.
Interestingly, Ninna’s tattoo sessions became a way to rewire her brain. Some sessions brought back painful memories, but each time, the fear lessened. She describes it as her brain being "reprogrammed." What once triggered trauma responses no longer affects her in the same way.
Transformation Through Tattooing
So far, Ninna has attended over 20 sessions at The Dark Gallery, each one teaching her more about herself. She has become more mindful of her body’s needs, transitioning to a vegetarian lifestyle and paying attention to her health, making sure she is in the best condition possible for tattooing and healing.
Redefining Confidence & Challenging Stereotypes
Beyond physical transformation, Ninna’s journey has reshaped her sense of self. Once quiet and easily influenced, she now asserts her boundaries in life. Tattoos have given her a voice and a way to shed the labels others had placed on her.
One particularly touching moment for Ninna came during a birthday celebration. Despite sitting across from an elderly woman who openly disliked tattoos, a mutual friend later shared that the woman found Ninna to be “the most beautiful person” she had ever met. This moment was a testament to how tattoos - and the confidence they bring - challenge societal stereotypes.
A Healing Space at The Dark Gallery

Ninna's journey to The Dark Gallery isn’t always easy. The trip involves an almost 2 hour train ride, something that previously triggered immense anxiety. But once inside the studio, she feels safe, able to release her emotions and share both tears and triumphs with Anders. Here, she knows she’s accepted, scars and all.
Ninna’s Message of Hope
For anyone struggling with anxiety, trauma, or self-esteem, Ninna’s story is a powerful reminder that tattooing can be more than just art - it can be therapy. At The Dark Gallery, Anders and his wife Linn, who manages the shop, understand that tattooing is deeply personal. They create a safe space where everyone can express, heal, and transform.
As Ninna continues her journey, she carries more than just tattoos on her skin - she carries the inner strength she’s gained through the process. And this strength will guide her for years to come.
